You’ve Got One Job To Do

As most of you, that have been in the habit of reading my periodical pearls of wisdom, can attest to is that I try not to put out something, if, at all possible, that is time sensitive. And what I mean by “Time Sensitive” is that material that you will read will be “not relevant” within a very short period of time; i.e a week or so.

But today, I thought I’d try something a little different. For you see on November 8th we, as Americans, will be going to our polling places (unless you’ve already either voted early or are mailing in your vote) to choose between one of two people to be the next leader of the free world.

Now, I don’t know about you, but, I can’t remember where I’ve seen in an election where our choices are not only limited, they are really no choices at all. My grandpa had a name for the  situation that our country is in and it is called “Picking the lesser of two evils”. Because, as most people I’ve spoken to have told me, no matter who wins, we all lose.

I am not going to get into a debate as to which of the two “front runners” of the two party system has the better platform. Nor will I even mention the names of any possible third, fourth, or even fifth party out there that might even do a better job than the two front runners we keep hearing about.

But what I am going to talk to you today about is a way we can show our displeasure as to what is being offered to us as candidates. Let’s forget for a moment that there has been a “hedging”, if you will, of one candidate over another by their own party. Let’s just assume, for the moment, that everything had been done legitimately and that we are now heading into the voting booth to cast our ballot and we are looking at the long list of candidates who want to occupy the Oval Office.

But let’s say you look at that list of candidates and you are not happy with what is being offered for your vote. It’s like going to a buffet table, looking at the stuff being offered for your consumption and nothing looks appetizing enough for you to eat. Hence now you understand what I am talking about.

Now, since you are not a player in the “En-Ef-El” (or any other overpaid professional and highly pampered professional athlete) you just can’t take a knee in the voting booth and expect everybody in America to rally you because you don’t like what is going on. No, you are going to do something about it and you are going to do it there in that booth.

You, my friend, are going to Vote.

Sure, it’s a given that you don’t like Candidate A anymore than you like Candidate B and, let’s face it, none of the “Third Party” even come close to having a shot of winning this race, you wonder if it’s even worth it to pick someone. But rest assured my confused and somewhat angry friend, it is important.

There are those who show their “displeasure” about what is going on in this country by taking a knee on TV during the National Anthem, just before they step out onto a field and play a game for millions of dollars a year that millions of kids, and even adults, play for free all year long. Of course, I am speaking to the previously mentioned overpaid professional and highly pampered professional athlete.

But my questions to these knee takers are the following: “What are you doing to try and change the situation you are ‘displeased’ about?” “Are you working within the system to try and obtain change thereby gathering followers to your cause?” Or, “Are you just ‘making a statement on a national stage’ because you feel “ostracized” over what is going on due to you feel you are not safe in your own country?” (Never mind the fact that you have security walk you to and from your luxury vehicle as you leave and arrive at your place of employment or the fact that you live in a gated community with a security system that rivals Fort Knox.)

Ladies and Gentlemen, if you are not happy with what is being offered in the booth or with the way our government is being run, then you need to go Vote. You need to show your displeasure with your ballot and not with baseless tantrums or childish acts of disobedience because you feel “cheated” in the system.

There have been brave men and women who have given up their lives and futures just so you can enjoy yours. They didn’t ask for anything in return. But I am going to ask for them: Please, go Vote. If you don’t want to do it for yourself, then do it for those who are no longer here and able to do it for themselves.

Oh, and on a side note. If you don’t like what is being offered in the way of choices for our next leaders of our government, there is a place you can write in the name of anybody you want. A friend of mine and I were discussing this very fact when he came up with the perfect response to the lackluster list of people we must choose from…

None of The Above.
